I enjoyed working with the fantastic team at The Gravel Institute on their latest video, ‘The Most Radical Speech in Presidential History‘.
I had total creative freedom to create an animated section, from storyboard to art direction and animation, so I was excited to have the opportunity to push myself out of my comfort zone!
Design Style
I knew I wanted the style to nod to the era of Roosevelt’s speech and have a retro feel whilst still feeling current with today’s animation trends.
After lots of experimentation with colour and effects, I opted for a warm colour palette with grain and subtle blur overlayed. I also chose to skew some of the illustrations to add interest and continue the imperfect feel.

I chose to work in a low frame rate for the animation and push myself to incorporate character animation and transitions when appropriate as well as timely cuts. Here are some behind the scenes from my After Effects project.
